Convergent-Divergent

Convergent-Divergent - Prism Art

Convergent-Divergent, is an enigmatic digital artwork with a split screen background dividing the visual plane: the left side immersed in blue, and the right side in stark, immaculate white. Each side holds the words “convergent” and “divergent,” set in precise arrangements of cyan and magenta hues. The colour placement is intentional, yet its effect—revealed through a prism—is nothing short of baffling.

When viewed through a prism at the correct focal distance and angle, cyan and magenta bands on the blue side, converge to form a white band along with the word convergent, while on the white side, the magenta and cyan bands combine to reveal a band of blue and the word convergent also turns blue. This shift alone is curious, but the real contradiction lies in the movement of colour. As if defying logic, magenta and cyan appear to shift in both directions as the cyan and magenta lettering on the words divergent appear to move further apart—shifting both up and down simultaneously—across the split screen as shown below.

On the blue background, magenta shifts up and cyan shifts down, while on the white background cyan shifts up and magenta shifts down, as indicated by the directional arrows. The visual result is a paradox: two opposing backgrounds revealing both convergence and divergence in the very same hues. The image captures an illusion where balance and contradiction coexist, prompting the question: how can these bands of light move in opposite directions and blend into such contradictory results? This duality—a controlled arrangement of colours yielding a surprising reveal—invites viewers to explore how opposites meet in perfect alignment, only to leave them questioning the nature of perception itself.
