Crisscross

Crisscross

This thought-provoking piece will have you questioning your understanding of light and colour. When viewing the image through a prism normally, the cross will turn blue and yellow and the wings will be cyan and red. However if you rotate the prism 90 degrees counter clockwise, perpendicular to the horizontal position, the colours swap and the cross turns red and cyan while the wings are yellow and blue.

Prism Held Horizontally
When viewing the original image with the prism held horizontally, the cross will turn blue and yellow, and the wings will turn cyan and red as shown below.

Prism Held Vertically
When viewing the original image with the prism held vertically (rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise from the horizontal position) the cross will turn red and cyan, and the wings will turn yellow and blue as shown below.

If you are having any troubles seeing the resulting images, don’t be discouraged. It takes a little practice to learn how to hold the prism right. For viewing instructions and tips, try reading the how to view prism art page.
